June 8, 2021 Update from Baseball Ontario - Stage 1 begins June 11th

Good Morning Hawks Families!

Ontario has announced that Stage 1 of the re-opening plan will begin on Friday June 11th!!  This means that Newmarket Baseball players are allowed to start training as soon as the Town of Newmarket confirms the diamonds are open!

I've included the updatel from Baseball Ontario below. Please read the entire email from Baseball Ontario as it includes detailed instructions on what is permitted during stage 1.

Here are 5 very important points that each team must adhere to.

1.  The Town of Newmarket has NOT yet confirmed that the diamonds will be open on Friday so teams must wait for that confirmation before any training can begin.

2. The 10 people limit (or 10 patrons) includes players, coaches and any volunteers/parents that are on the diamonds. I realize the email from Baseball Ontario made it seem like the 10 person limit only included players but the Ontario.ca website clearly says 10 people.

  • Outdoor fitness classes, outdoor groups in personal training and outdoor individual/team sport training to be permitted with up to 10 people, among other restrictions;

3.  Coaches can run split squad practice with a limit of 10 people in the infield and 10 people in the outfield at the same time but those two squads have to stay completely separate.  Coaches, players, or parents can not move between the squads.

4.  Everyone must practice physical distancing at all times.

5.  All parents, players, coaches, and volunteers must complete a self screening prior to each practice.  If you are sick, stay home!)

6.  All parents, players, coaches are required to submit attendance on the Ontario Baseball ON Deck App or website.  Paper attendance is not permitted this year.  The On Deck app can be downloaded or you can login to the On Deck website.   Check with your coach if you are required to submit your own attendance online or if the coach will be submitting the team attendance for you.  Remember,  If you have a split squad that day, the location should include the squad location (ie Armstrong 1, Infield, or Fairgrounds 2 outfield)

7.  The Return to Sport Protocols from Baseball Ontario was updated March 2021.  Please review this document in full by clicking the ink below:
Baseball Ontario Return to Sport Protocols

8.  Ontario Baseball includes the following regarding face masks:

 Players and coaches are required to wear non-medical face masks or face coverings while off the field of play including while on the bench during the game.
 Players are encouraged to wear non-medical face masks or face coverings during play.
 Coaches in the field of play must wear non-medical face masks or face coverings when they approach a player, other coach or umpire. Coaches are encouraged to wear non-medical face masks or face coverings in other situations.

Baseball Ontario is meeting with the ministry on Wednesday this week.  If there are any further updates you will receive another email.  If you have any questions regarding what is included in this update please feel free to reply to this email.

PRACTICES CAN RESUME AS OF JUNE 11TH

The provincial government announced today that Ontario will move to Step 1 of the Roadmap to Reopen on Friday, June 11th!

As such, Baseball Ontario will lift the suspension of in-person baseball activities as of 12:01am on Friday, June 11, 2021. NOTE: only outdoor activities are permitted under government regulations. No indoor practices.

In Step 1, we are restricted to training only, in groups of up to 10 "patrons" (i.e. players).

As per the Baseball Ontario Return to Sport Protocols, 2 events are permitted on one baseball diamond. This means that 2 different groups, of not more than 10 each, can participate in separate practices on the same field. One team could split into 2 such groups as long as they stay separate throughout the practices. Everyone must stay in their own group and there can be no players, coaches or other persons participating in both events even if the two groups came from one team.

Any equipment used by one event or group must be cleaned/sanitized prior to use by the other event or group, including if both events are being run by the same team (i.e. a split squad practice). All activities for both events must adhere to the distancing measures required by the provincial government, the relevant municipality and public health authorities and the Baseball Ontario Protocol.

Please note the following rules when implementing these protocols:

  • Diamonds must be age group appropriate. For example, one full size (regulation) diamond can be used to accommodate two 10-person events of any age category. “Regulation” meaning at least 300’ down left/right field, and 350’ at centre field.   However, at a 13U-sized diamond, participants in older age categories (14U+) would be limited to one 10-person event. Participants in 13U and younger age categories could have two 10-person events at a 13U-sized diamond.
  • Government rules do not allow for spectators, except for one parent/guardian for players under the age of 18 years.

Full team practices as one group are still not permitted, as long as the provincial restrictions on gatherings remain at 10!
It is important to ensure NO gatherings of large groups while activity is taking place. Please respect social/physical distancing measures as set in place by governmental public health authorities.

All activities delivered must adhere to the distancing measures and recommendations, along with any gathering restrictions issued by the Ontario Government, relevant municipality and public health authorities and Baseball Ontario Protocol, including the arrival and departure of players, including:
  • Prescreening before attending (If you are exhibiting symptoms, stay home)
  • Attendance tracking
  • Regular hand sanitizing (at least every 30 minutes)

Our focus is getting back to baseball in Step 1. We are meeting with the ministry on Wednesday, and hope to get clarification on what will be allowed in Step 2 and Step 3. We will provide another update in the regular edition of the Inside Pitch on Wednesday!
