Umpire FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Please also visit the FAQ section on the Ontario Baseball website HERE

Q: I am only available to umpire certain days of the week.  Is the umpire scheduling flexible?

A: Yes. Many of our umpires play on sports teams themselves, or have other commitments on different days of the week.  The NBA has an online system for our umpires to manage when they are available. Our scheduler only assigns you to games which you have indicated you are able to umpire.

Q: What is the umpire uniform and do I need to provide my own?

A: All umpires are required to be prepared to umpire games behind the plate and at the bases. This means that all umpires will require an umpire uniform.  This includes a navy blue umpire shirt, blue or black umpire hat,  grey pants, (cup if applicable), black belt, black socks and black cleats or running shoes.  All umpires are required to purchase a plate brush, black ball back and indicator.  These items typically come in a kit that is available at sportchek or on amazon.   If you will be a plate umpire in 11U and above you will also require safety equipment: mask, chest protector and shin guards.
This equipment is available on Centretown Sports in Barrie and online from several umpire equipment suppliers. More information about the equpiment needed will be provided at the in person camp.

Q: Will I get yelled at?

A: While baseball is a highly competitive game, there are rules in place in order to keep arguments at a minimum, as well as to protect the umpires.  One thing to remember: always remain confident with your call; in baseball there are two teams, and on EACH pitch or play, one of the teams is not going to be happy with the outcome.  If there are problems, you are always encouraged to contact the Umpire-In-Chief, Doug Yarenko, and he will ensure that the situation is looked into.

Q: What is the pay rate?

A:  The pay rate for umpires in Newmarket Baseball depends on the age level you Umpire.  Newmarket Baseball uses umpires to officiate all games between the 7U Level (6-7 year olds) and the Junior Level (Ages 22U), at the house league, select, and Rep levels.  The higher the age level the higher the pay rate will be.   The pay rates are between $40 and $115 per game.

All first year umpires should expect to begin umpiring at the 7U and 9U age groups for house league games only. With experience umpires advance to older divisions.
