Rep / Select FAQ

FAQ for Rep/Select/Elite tryouts for the 2025 Season

1.  What is the difference between Select, Rep and Elite?

Select, Rep and Elite are all competitive leagues at different levels.

Select is not as competitive as Rep, but is designed as stepping stone from House League into a more competitive baseball style. Players on the Select team do not play on a house league team. You should expect your child to have one practice during the week and play games on the weekend. There may also be 2-4 tournaments a year depending on the schedule the coach chooses. Tournaments can be in a number of locations such as Aurora, Markham, Mississauga etc or as far as London or Niagara Falls. Teams are able to choose which tournaments they want to enter and how far they want to trave
l.

Rep is a more competitive league.  Most age groups for the Hawks have two teams: one at AAA or AA, and the second team at A.  Players on these players do not play in House League.  You should expect your child to have one practices each week and one or two games which usually fall during the week but may be on weekend.  Teams also plays in 2-4 weekend tournaments per season (may include one trip to the U.S. depending on the team)  plus 1-2 playoff tournaments.

Elite is only offered at the  (15U),  (16U), (17U/18U) levels.  These players do not play in House League or Rep.  This league is exactly what the name represents - an Elite League.  This is a highly competitive league that features the top teams and players throughout Ontario.  Visit www.elitebaseball.ca for more information.  Newmarket Baseball has a dedicated elite site that can be found at the following link: Newmarket Elite Baseball

.

3.  Do I have to pre-register for tryouts?

Players must pre-register and pay online with a credit card.  Registration will be available from the main page on the website under the REGISTER HERE tab.

4.  What are the fees to tryout?

There is a one-time fee of $30.  Players who tryout for a higher level rep team and are not selected to play on that team do not have to pay the fee again to attend the select tryouts.

Players who live outside of the Ysba must follow the YSBA release policy. New this year, players do not require a release to tryout.  Select players never need a release.

6. How many of the tryout dates and times must my child attend?

The Newmarket Baseball board recommends that all players attend a minimum of two (2) tryouts but a manager may sign a player after 1 tryout when necessary.  If you are unable to make it to all the tryout dates, discuss this individually with the coach at the first tryout you attend.  Each coach has a format that they follow for tryouts and may make cuts after each date or may wait until all tryouts are complete before making cuts.

7.  Will there be two rep teams in each division?

Second rep teams for each division will be considered pending the number of players attending the tryouts.  If there are enough players to make a second team and a coach available, a second team will be considered at each level.
*There are currently NO second teams for Junior and Senior rep teams.

8.  Which divisions are offering a select team?

Select teams are decided based on the number of participants that attend the rep tryouts.  If there are many players that come out a Select team will be chosen.  In 2024 we hope to have select teams in 9U, 11U and 13U and 15U

9.  Does my child need to attend the highest teir for their age group if they only want to play on the A team or the Select team?

Players are welcome to tryout at the highest teir for their division but are not required to. For example, if your child is only interested in trying out for the Select team they are able to skip the AAA tryouts and only attend the tryouts for the select team.

10.  How many games, practices, tournaments will my child have if he makes the team?

These types of questions are division and age specific.  Each coach decides how many practices per week and how many tournaments he wants to enter his team in for the year.  You will be able to ask the coach these types of questions at the tryouts.

11.  What are the fees required if my child makes the team?

Each player must pay their NBA membership fee for their division as per the fee structure determined in late fall.  (approx $500) This cost covers your NBA membership fee, YSBA and OBA membership fees, home and away jersey, ball cap and player insurance.  You will also have to pay Team fee as set by the coach (this includes indoor workout fees, tournament fees, equipment fees etc.). On average you should expect to pay between $1000 and $1500 for the year (plus travel expenses to away tournaments).  This amount may be higher or lower depending on how many tournaments your team attends, if the team purchases matching bags and helmets etc, and if the team has indoor workouts at a school gym or a private facility.

A breakdown of the 2025 Rep fees will be provided at a later date.  The coach will typically have a preliminary budget available for each division at the first tryout date.
