NEWMARKET MAXXIMUM FITNESS ROOKIE HAWKS - 2013 OBA FINALISTS
After opening the tournament with convincing 15-5 win over Whitby, the Hawks lost 9-3 to Oshawa after Oshawa broke open a 2-2 game midway through the contest. After a bye, the Hawks then had to face Cambridge. Both teams played exceptional defense as the 1-1 score after 5 innings indicates, but the Hawks' bats caught fire in the 6th and 7th innings en route to an 11-3 win. Carter Campeau at 2B and Tyler Repath at SS were exceptionally strong up the middle as they, along with 3B Kade Hennessy and 1B Matthew MacKenzie, led the D to four double plays.
That win earned the Hawks a rematch with Oshawa, and some observers are calling this the most exciting game they have witnessed at any level of baseball! Again, both teams played exceptional defense with three more double plays involving Campeau, Repath, and MacKenzie and the game was scoreless after 5-and-a-half innings. Down 2-0 in the bottom of the 7th inning, the Hawks comeback was ignited by a single by Adam Cherutti and then a double by Michael Gowanlock. With the season on the line, Campeau ripped a line drive up the middle to tie the game.
After shutting Oshawa down in the bottom of the 7th, Ben Lisi tripled in the first extra inning and then scored on an error. The Hawks now led by one.
In their half of the inning, Oshawa had runners on first and second with none out. Their next batter ripped one up the middle but Cherutti made a fantastic play at pitcher to get the force at third. What came next was almost unbelievable: the Oshawa batter hit a strong single up the middle but Maddox Bulmer charged the ball and made a perfect throw to Campeau for the force at second. The Oshawa runner who started at second was sent home for the tying run but Campeau alertly fired the ball to catcher Noah Revie; the runner hit the brakes and Revie and Hennessy perfectly executed a five-throw rundown for the final out. Hawks win 3-2, and pandemonium ensued!
In the championship final, the Hawks ran into a strong team from LaSalle who had gone 4-0 in the tournament, including three wins by mercy. A close 5-2 game for LaSalle after four innings was extended to a 13-2 final after six. Despite the loss, the game featured web gems by Maddox Bulmer at 3B and Brody Hassall at P. Jensen Hums went 2-2 and, along with Repath, scored the Hawks runs, and Cameron Byers had the final hit of the season for the Hawks with a line shot over shortstop.
Congratulations to the players, manager Jason Hassall, and assistant coaches Gerard Campeau, Jamie Cherutti, and Kevin Hennessy for a fine season and their run to a silver medal at the OBAs.
