Newmarket Hawks Rookie Select Finalists in West Hill Tournament – June 21 – 23, 2013

First tournament jitters from some of the parents, but the kids remained calm. Lots of laughing, cheering and singing comes from the Hawks dugout. The umpire calls in the coaches for the coin the toss and then it happens…PLAY BALL.
First game under the lights for most of the boys. “Just like in the BIGS”, is heard from the dugout. Game 1 is underway and the boys are in it as a team. Plays being made are appreciated by the fans and the cheers are deafening during a 13-run inning. Game 1 – Pickering Cardinals are defeated 22 -3.
Saturday morning the weather is not favourable, but no complaints from the boys in green. The tarp goes up over the dugout, play continues and then a 40 minute storm delay. Game resumes with no spirits dampened and the Richmond Hill Phoenix is defeated 15 -1. Awesome.
The team scatters for lunch during a down pour. You can still hear the cheers and chatter from the boys from the cars during the break.
Convenor decides the fields are done and a coin toss gets the Hawks the 3rd win to move to the semi finals on Sunday.
Sunday morning proves to be a great morning for a ballgame and all is dry. With the aroma of Timmies in the bleachers, the chants start again and high fives all around. Bats are working hard and plays are stellar and the Guelph Royals are defeated 25 -16.
Sunday afternoon, the finals against the Toronto North Giants, the boys endured the extreme heat for 1 ½ hours. Toronto North Giants took the final and the Rookie Select team received their finalist trophies with nothing but smiles.
Congratulations Team! You did Newmarket proud.
