Junior Rookie Hawks Win Silver at the OBA's!
2009-09-08
The "little team that could", Coach Doug Lunney's Rookie Hawks captured the Silver Medal at the OBA Championships in Tecumseh Labour Day Weekend.
We couldn't have been prouder of our team who represented Newmarket with class, and though they were a lot smaller in stature, they certainly had the biggest hearts of any team there. We lost our first game to the Cambridge Cubs on the Friday night but then went on to win four straight games, including a come from behind victory on Saturday afternoon against Oshawa - coming back from a 10-run deficit to defeat them 25-24 with a double-play to end the game!!! On Sunday morning, the little guys fought hard again to defeat London Oakridge by 1 run - making an out from LF to homeplate to end the game! We met up with a tough team from North London in the finals - a team who had only lost 2 games the entire season - and the boys had run out of gas at that point, but boy were we ever proud of them.
The little team that could- a team who many said would never win a game this season...to get all the way to the "A" finals in the provincial championship is quite an accomplishment!
