First Time’s A Charm - 14U AAA Hawks Win OBA Championship
Congratulations to the Newmarket Hawks 14U AAA team for their success at OBA's beating Milton Mets 4-3 in the Championship game!
The Newmarket Hawks 14U AAA team were victorious in their first OBA AAA appearance, beating the Milton Mets 4-3 in a tightly contested final. The Hawks finished the tournament with a 5 and 1 record beating every team they faced at least once. Newmarket opened the tournament vs. the competitive North York Blues. Leading 5-2 in the top of the 6th, the game was suspended due to curfew rules and needed to be resumed the next morning. This was a tough blow which would require the Hawks to finish the first game and play 3 more on Saturday.
The Hawks closed out game one strong with a 9-3 win. Newmarket then played one of the toughest teams in the province, the Etobicoke Rangers. Tied after 5, the Hawks put up 3 in the sixth and that’s all she wrote, 7–4 Final. After the emotional high of beating Etobicoke, the Hawks settled in and played two very solid games vs. West Toronto and Oakville. What began as a long road was now down to 4 teams and the Hawks were undefeated.
Sunday morning opened up with a bit of a wrinkle in the armor where the boys bent but they did not break. All that was left was the championship final and what a final it was. It ended in the bottom of the seventh with the Milton Mets’ tying runner at the plate, who in turn hit a rocket into the gap just tipping off the outfielder’s glove. The runner turned on the jets to go for the extra bag but the centrefielder threw a dart to second. The runner slid, the tag was made and gloves were flying everywhere even before the umpire made his epic punch out. HAWKS WIN! HAWKS WIN! HAWKS WIN!
The 14U Hawks would like to thank the Newmarket Baseball Association for giving them the structure and support to be the best 14U baseball team in the Province in 2019. Small towns can still…WIN BIG!!!
