"The last 3 games were the best games we've played in all year. The other teams in our league improved a lot over the course of the season," Coach Tim said afterwards. "At the beginning of the year we were winning all our games by Mercy Rule. I think it shows how much preparation we did in the gym over the winter. Our team really started the year in mid-season form. I'm just happy we managed to keep our edge until the finish."
The final game against Richmond Hill showcased the best defence of the season for both teams. The 2-1 nailbiter wasn't decided until Newmarket's Rover, Jason, made a great catch on an infield pop-up. After the celebration, handshakes and kind words were exchanged by both coaches, and both teams received t-shirts.
"It was a great catch by Jason to end the game. Honestly, I thought he'd run in too far, but he managed to throw his glove up and behind him a bit and the baseball gods felt he deserved to catch that ball. I think they're right. Jason was the most improved player on our team over the course of the season and it was fitting for him to make that play."
The Hawks have exhibition games this weekend against the Minor Rookie Rep team and an All-Star Squad of Rookie House-league players. Games are at 2, 4 and 6 at Fairgrounds #2 on Sunday. Good seats are still available.
