Rookie Select Hawks go 2 and 1 at Etobicoke Tournament | 11 and 0 in YSBA play

2014-07-16

The Hawks won 2 and lost 1 at the Lloyd McConnie Memorial Tournament in Etobicoke, and then improved to 11 and 0 in League Play on Sunday night.

NEWMARKET - The Rookie Select Hawks played in the Lloyd McConnie Memorial Tournament in Etobicoke on the weekend.  Saturday's morning game was a 13-3 victory over the Brampton Blue Jays.  Justin and Chris each hit homeruns deep to the outfield and there were plenty of extra base hits.  A team lunch arranged by the charming and talented Amanda followed, then the afternoon game pitted the Hawks against the Leaside Leafs.

"Leaside definitely had the strongest team in our group," Coach Tim said afterward.  "It's a shame that only 1 team advanced, because our kids played well.  Nice to see them get their first couple of wins in a tournament."

The Leafs beat the Hawks 13-6.  Sunday morning's 8 a.m. game vs. Annette was delayed by rain, but the sun broke through for the Hawks and a 10-9 comeback win followed.  Trailing 9 to 5, the Hawks rallied for 5 runs in the bottom of the 5th, then shut the door for the last 2 innings.

The Hawks parents and players then had to hang around to wait and see how the tiebreakers played out.  Unfortunately, things didn't fall into place, and it was off to Markham for Sunday night's league game.  The Hawks won 10-1 powered by solid defence, Coach Tim's pitching, and Gabriel's massive opposite field home run.

"I mixed up the lineup a bit on defence and the kids seemed to enjoy that.  I'll try to do that a bit more often when possible.  The pitching machine debacle was a pain, but it was a lot of fun pitching to the kids.  I was just happy I didn't hit anyone."

The Hawks practice on Thursday before hosting Richmond Hill on Sunday evening for a double-header.  Good seats are still available.
