Hawks v Hawks: Newmarket Victorious over Windsor to Win 15UA Tournament in Barrie

The 15U Newmarket Hawks Rep A team went undefeated in Barrie last weekend to win the 15UA tournament in convincing fashion. After a close 7-5 win over the host Barrie Baycats on Friday night, the Hawks had lop-sided victories over Markham and Clarington on Saturday, earning the top-seed in the 10-team tourney heading into the playoff round on Sunday.

 

Sunday morning saw the Hawks playing a fellow YSBA team, the Mansfield Cubs. The powerhouse Cubs are 11-1 on the regular season and were the clear favourite going into the contest. But Newmarket got off to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and were cruising until the 5^th when Mansfield tied the game. Newmarket scored in the bottom of the 5^th and held off late charges by the Cubs in the 6^th and 7^th, stunning the Cubs to win the game 7-6. 

 

It was Hawks v Hawks in the final, with the Newmarket Hawks playing the Windsor Hawks.  Newmarket scored five runs in the first and on the strength of excellent pitching and solid defence, held on to win the championship, 10-8.

 

Newmarket's pitching and defence was excellent over the entire weekend, leading the tournament in fewest runs allowed. The offence was also outstanding, leading the tournament in runs scored.
