The Newmarket Hawks 16U Elite team, sponsored by Royal Containers, made it all the way to the finals at the weeklong Cal Ripken, Jr. "Surfs Up" tournament in Myrtle Beach, SC.
And congratulations to 1B/P RJ Tuck who won the Home Run Derby in the 16U division. RJ received his award from none other than Hall of Famer Cal Ripken, Jr. who served as the tournament ambassador.
During a private team photo with the Hawks, Cal asked the boys to honor a lesson he had learned years ago from his father Cal Sr.: when greeting someone, make sure your handshake is firm and look the person in the eye. And in the opening ceremonies Cal emphasised the importance of sportmanship and playing the game the "right way." Cal recalled warning an opposing player of a hidden ball trick, never stealing signs, and warning a stealing Rickey Henderson to stand up on a foul ball to help save Rickey the wear and tear of an unnecessary hard slide.
All in all, it was a memorable week for the 16U Hawks players, coaches, and families on the diamond and on the beach!
Congratulations to all House League Champions and Finalists!!
