2016-08-07
Campers and camp staff take a break on the bleachers
The Newmarket Baseball Association, in partnership with the Town of Newmarket, hosted its 3rd annual Summer Academy from Aug. 2-5 at the Ray Twinney diamonds.
Camp staff are all volunteers trying to help grow the game, and this year's volunteer team included Tim Boswell (head coach, Major Peewee AAA Hawks), Al Ouellette (asst. coach, Major Bantam AA Hawks), John Parker (NBA house league coach), Rob Hums (asst. coach, Minor Bantam AAA Hawks), and 13 students.
The 2016 camp featured a mini-tournament as well as an expanded skills competition that included fastest runner (home-1B and home-home), guess your pitch speed, fastest pitch, longest throw, most accurate throw, and the ever-popular Home Run Derby.
Campers received a commemorative Cooperstown Bat Co. wood mini-bat at the end of camp as well as complementary Kids' Meals from NBA sponsor Buffalo Wild Wings. Net proceeds from the Summer Academy help sponsor multiple NBA house league teams.
